Popular Ghanaian socialite Sister Derby has expressed skepticism about the recent fire outbreak at Kantamanto, raising doubts about what she described as the ‘unbothered’ demeanor of one of the market’s leaders.

During an interview with the Chairman of the Kantamanto Railway No. 2 Traders Association, Yiadom Adarkwa, at the scene of the incident, Sister Derby noticed what she described as an unusually indifferent and unperturbed composure from the chairman.

She questioned how someone in such a leadership position, dealing with a crisis of this magnitude, could remain so calm.

Sister Derby went on to express concern, stating that the chairman might have benefited from the fire incident.

“The chairman of Kantamanto doesn’t seem bothered at all oo. My guy, you collect some money or how because you seem so glad narrating the incident.

“I sense no empathy from his side for the hardworking traders who depend on Kant to survive!” she wrote in English and Pijin

She also took a moment to express deep sympathy for the traders who have been affected by the fire.

“Kantamanto burning is so so devastating. The biggest hub of sustainability and a livelihood for many is gone once again. Where the most upcycling and reusing of clothes giving them a second life, takes place, saving most clothes from ending up in our oceans and landfills, hence, reducing pollution to some extent. So sad for all the traders,” she added.

Meanwhile, hundreds of traders have been displaced after a devastating fire ravaged Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District, leaving nearly the entire market in ashes.

The blaze, which erupted late on January 2, 2024, caused widespread destruction, with traders desperately trying to salvage their goods as the flames spread rapidly.

The Ghana National Fire Service has reportedly responded with 13 fire tenders from across the Greater Accra Region to battle the fire.

Authorities have indicated that they are still working to determine the cause of the blaze and assess the extent of the damage.
