Being a trotro mate may not be the first job that springs to mind when considering high-paying work, but for many, it is a dependable and consistent source of income.

One trotro mate, speaking from personal experience, reveals how his hard work and determination allow him to earn up to 7,800 cedis each month.

“I make 260 cedis every single day,” says Kwame, a trotro mate in Accra.

“If I work every day in the month, that adds up to 7,800 cedis.”

That’s a big sum, especially given how constant the revenue is. But it’s not all easy money—being a trotro mate presents its own set of obstacles.

The profession necessitates early starts and long hours, typically from sunrise to sundown. “I start my day as early as 5 a.m.,” Kwame explains.

“I work hard and hustle to ensure the customers are well served and the bus is constantly full. If I don’t work, I don’t earn money.” I

It is evident that in order to earn this amount, the trotro mate must stay on top of things and be active throughout the day.

While the money may seem good, the work entails more than just collecting fares. “You have to deal with a lot of passengers—some are friendly, some are not,” Kwame goes on.

“You also need to ensure that the driver is following the route, and you may have to deal with arguments in the vehicle. It can be stressful, but that’s part of the job.”

Despite the hurdles, many individuals, including Kwame, find it worthwhile.

“It’s not the easiest job, but it gives me enough money to take care of my family and pay the bills,” he jokes.

For those wishing to make a reasonable living, becoming a trotro mate can be an excellent option.

Of course, it’s more than just the money; it’s also about the lifestyle. “You have to love the hustle,” Kwame continues.

“There’s no place for laziness. If you want to make money as a trotro mate, you must be committed and willing to work hard every day.
