The social media accounts of Ligue 1 have clapped back at Ronaldo after the Real Madrid legend took a dig at French football as a whole.

During the Globe Soccer Awards, Ronaldo made a bold statement about France’s Ligue 1, asserting that the Saudi Pro League, where he currently plays, has a higher level of competition.

His statement caused quite a stir, sparking widespread debate across the football world, as fans of French football suggested that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s comments were aimed at downgrading the level of competitiveness within Ligue 1.

The fans have now been backed by Ligue 1’s social media team. In a post made on the evening of Saturday, December 28, 2024, the official Ligue 1 account on X mocked Ronaldo by referencing the World Cup trophy won by arch-rival Lionel Messi in Qatar back in 2022.

    The post included a caption:

‘Leo Messi playing in 38 degrees,’ clearly responding to Ronaldo’s statement about how hot it is in the Middle East and how some players might find it difficult to play there.

    Read the post below:

This isn’t the first time Ronaldo has cast doubt on the level of Ligue 1. He previously expressed surprise at the quality of play in the Saudi Pro League, even suggesting it could rival some of Europe’s top leagues, including Ligue 1.
