As Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, begins his return to leadership, the potential of him pursuing a second straight term has become a hot issue.

Some are advocating for a constitutional modification to allow him to serve two consecutive terms, despite warnings from detractors such as Professor Steven Adei, who say such a move would jeopardize the country’s political stability.

Critics claim that John Mahama should not campaign for a constitutional amendment, implying that it is motivated by personal ambition.

However, this viewpoint ignores Mahama’s record of integrity and statesmanship. Unlike certain politicians who are frequently accused of wanting power for personal benefit, Mahama has constantly demonstrated that his judgments are based on Ghana’s well-being, rather than personal interests.

If Mahama amends the constitution, it will most likely be to reflect his vision for Ghana’s future.

Ghanaians delivered him a tremendous victory in the recent election, with a large majority in Parliament, allowing him to make bold moves without fear of persistent criticism.

What matters now is whether he can satisfy the expectations of the people and keep his promises.

Mahama’s supporters believe that if he performs well over the next four years, Ghanaians will contemplate a referendum to extend his term.

After all, a resounding win should enable the chosen leader to implement the required adjustments for the country’s advancement.

If Mahama can improve the economy, generate jobs, and handle national challenges, it makes sense to keep him in charge.

Personally, I feel Mahama has the potential to make a positive difference and should be given the opportunity to serve another term if he demonstrates his abilities.

Ghana requires leaders who are determined to improving the country, and Mahama has demonstrated his commitment to doing so.

Those who remained mute during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure should not now attempt to undermine Mahama’s presidency.

It is time for Ghanaians to move forward and allow their elected leaders to implement changes that would benefit the country.
