President-Elect John Dramani Mahama was in awe of the confidence and bravery exhibited by Ghanaian Olympic Games medalist, Samuel Takyi.

After winning his bout at the Ultimate Legacy fight night organized by Sharaf Mahama, a son of John Mahama, Takyi seized the opportunity to address the President-Elect, who was present to support his son.

In his address, Takyi appealed to the incoming government to pay attention to boxing, as the sport has the potential to become the biggest in the country.

Addressing President-Elect John Mahama, Takyi reiterated his commitment to win a world title for Ghana and appealed to Mahama to make the development of boxing a key feature of his government.

The passion and enthusiasm shown by Samuel Takyi ‘infected’ the crowd at the Bukom Boxing Arena, who stood up to applaud and cheer him on for making a strong case for state investment in boxing.

Eventually, the President-Elect was left with no option but to stand up and join in the applause as Takyi continued his passionate speech.

“In 2016, he told me I was going to be a great boxer, and the greatness has just started. I’m promising that I will be a world champion in his time, so the government should help me. I have done it for the country, and I’m going to raise the Ghana flag high again.”

In the bout held on December 22, 2024, Samuel Takyi secured a third-round knockout over Odalai Lamptey in their lightweight contest.
