The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed its preparedness for the festive season.

While cautioning the general public to adopt fire safety measures during the festive season, it expressed readiness to combat any emergency situations.

Head of Public Relations, Desmond Ackah, disclosed that the GNFS had about 50% of their fire engines damaged, but they have repaired over 85% of these damaged engines.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5, Ackah indicated that if Ghanaians call their emergency lines, it will take not more than five minutes for them to get to scenes of outbreaks.

“Just recently, it was revealed that 50% of our fire engines were damaged, but through the efforts of management, we have repaired about 85% of them. The engines may have served for years, but we have done the needed repairs and trained our personnel to manage any emergency.

If Ghanaians call out emergency lines on time, we will dispatch our personnel anywhere with emergencies. If the public does not joke or prank us, within five minutes and depending on where the incident had occurred and the nearest fire station, we will be anywhere in time and serve the people,” he assured.

He advised event organisers to interact with the GNFS so it will provide strategies to prevent outbreaks and other incidents.

He also revealed that they have trained over 6,000 fire volunteers to assist persons who would want to engage in bush burning.

He added that they have also activated their task force to embark on domestic fire education in our homes and markets.

“We have also engaged with market managers on best approaches in preventing outbreaks in our markets. This is crucial especially as we are in the festive season and the harmattan season.”
