According to Citi Newsroom, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sign the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill into law prior to his departure.

Dr. Opare Kwakye emphasized the significance of the law and urged the President to solidify his legacy by endorsing it during his remarks at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary launch at Osu Castle. “As Presbyterians, we viewed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill as our birthday present this year because we supported it when the church was led by my predecessor,” he said. The church is confident that President Akufo-Addo will live up to their aspirations, Dr. Opare Kwakye said. “Your Excellency, complete our happiness. Following the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to reject two petitions contesting the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—also referred to as the anti-gay bill—his comments follow.

The Court upheld the validity of the bill on December 18, 2024, rejecting the petitions of broadcast journalist and attorney Richard Dela Sky and Amanda Odoi. The contentious bill has generated a great deal of national discussion since it was approved by Parliament on February 28, 2024. Critics claim it violates basic human rights and individual liberties, while supporters maintain that it preserves cultural norms and traditional family values. The future of the bill is still up in the air notwithstanding the Court’s decision. Prior to acting on the legislation, President Akufo-Addo had stated that he was expecting legal resolutions.

Reflecting the wider cultural and religious attitude among its members, Dr. Opare Kwakye’s petition is a powerful push for the bill’s passage from the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. The President’s call to action emphasizes how important the Act is as a turning point in the preservation of Christian and African values.
