The Director of Training at the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has condemned the cases of electoral violence following the recent December 7, 2024 general election.

Speaking at an event organized by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, where the findings of the 2024 elections were presented, Dr Quaicoe stressed the importance of maintaining electoral integrity and respecting the will of the voters.

He likened elections to job applications, where voters act as employers, stressing that candidates should wait for the voters’ decision before claiming victory.

“It is the voter who is your employer. So, whatever the employer, who the voter is, does, is what should be sustained. So, you cannot impose yourself on the voter. Other than that, we should abolish voting so that the strongest people will become our leaders,” he said.

Dr Quaicoe also expressed concerns over the cases of electoral violence, warning that it sets a dangerous precedence in the country.

He warned that if such actions are allowed, future elections could be compromised.

“So, what is the issue now? Because if you have your collation, you know the truth. You know whether your application has been accepted or rejected. So, why do we then fight over results?

“This is not something we should take lightly. Other than that, we will not have elections going forward because if somebody is able to disrupt it, and get what he’s looking for, why wouldn’t he do it the next time? We should not allow this to be a precedent for us. If you allow this to become precedent, then we should stop voting. So, let us take this thing very seriously. We all know the processes,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders to adhere to the established procedures and ensure that the true will of the voters is respected, thereby preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democratic system.
