Ghanaian musician, Kwame Asare Obeng, well-known as A Plus, who was recently elected Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has outlined his priorities as he prepares to assume office, making it clear that his focus will be on serving his constituents, not the entertainment industry.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz, A Plus emphasized that his mandate stems from the trust and support of the people of Gomoa Central, not the creative community.

“I want to make it clear that I’m not going to Parliament to fight for the entertainment industry,” he stated. “My sole responsibility is to work diligently and deliver results for the people of Gomoa Central, who believed in me and voted massively to put me in this position.”

A Plus candidly pointed out that no major creative industry bodies, such as the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) or the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), rallied behind him during his campaign.

“When I was contesting, there wasn’t any collective support from MUSIGA, FIPAG, or any other creative group,” he explained. “It was just a handful of friends in the industry who stood by me. That’s why I’m focused on the people of Gomoa Central, who put their confidence in me—not the creative industry.”

He also expressed a critical perspective on the creative sector, stating that many industry players tend to overestimate their significance while neglecting to address the pressing issues facing the sector. However, he praised dancehall artist Shatta Wale for his proactive stance and advocacy.

“Shatta Wale has been making a lot of sense. I think the industry players should start paying attention to what he says—his ideas could really help them,” A Plus said.

The newly elected MP secured a decisive victory in Gomoa Central, earning 14,277 votes to unseat the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) incumbent MP, Naana Eyiah Quansah, with a margin of 2,640 votes.

Reflecting on his journey into politics, A Plus revealed that his decision to run for Parliament was a well-thought-out plan that began six years ago.

“I knew this was a path I wanted to take, so I prepared myself,” he said. “I went back to school to earn a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s, and an LLB. Equipping myself with the necessary knowledge was key, and I’m thrilled to see it pay off today.”

With a solid plan and a clear focus on governance, A Plus is poised to bring meaningful change to Gomoa Central while leaving the creative industry to chart its own course.
