Head coach of the Sudan national team, Kwasi Appiah, has opened up about the conflict he faced in balancing his role as a member of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Executive Council (ExCo) and his duties as Sudan’s coach.

After Sudan was placed in the same group as Ghana for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requested that Appiah step down from one of his roles—either as Sudan’s head coach or as a member of the GFA Executive Council.

In response, Appiah temporarily relinquished his position on the GFA Executive Council until the conclusion of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

In an interview with Oyerepa FM, the Sudan manager revealed that he was asked to excuse himself from Executive Council meetings whenever discussions about the Black Stars arose.

“Since Ghana and Sudan were placed in the same qualification group, what happened was when the ExCo was having any discussion on the Black Stars, I was asked to leave the meetings so they could discuss. For me, it wasn’t a big deal. I didn’t expect to be part of those meetings since I was the coach of Sudan,” he said.

Appiah has since resumed his role on the GFA Executive Council following the conclusion of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
