The 2024 elections have proven to be a landmark event in Ghana’s democratic journey. Following the concession of defeat by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana is set to witness a historic moment with the emergence of its first female Vice President.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and president-elect John Dramani Mahama, is set to make history as the first female vice president of the country.

An accomplished academic, former Minister of Education, and the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Opoku-Agyemang brings to the position a wealth of experience and an enviable legacy.

Her inclusion on the ticket was celebrated by all especially women’s rights groups as a bold move toward greater gender representation in leadership and governance positions. Professor Jane Naana’s election marks a defining moment for women in politics across Ghana and the African continent.

Although official results from the Electoral Commission are pending, Dr. Bawumia’s concession has sparked nationwide celebrations, with citizens and supporters of the NDC jubilating over this historic victory.
