Tragedy has struck in Nyankpala, a town in the Tolon constituency of the Northern Region of Ghana. A heated argument between two political opponents escalated into violence, resulting in the death of one person.

The incident occurred when the Northern Regional Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Rashid Salifu, got into an argument with the parliamentary candidate of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Osman Damba. The argument allegedly centered around accusations of vote buying in the area.

The situation quickly spiralled out of control, with gunfire erupting and leaving one person dead and another critically injured. The police were quickly called to the scene, and they have since arrested four suspects in connection with the incident.

The suspects, who have been identified as Majid Issah, Fodi Issiage Kamara, Yakubu Simalia, and Alhaji Bashiru Mohamed, are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations. The police have also confirmed that the injured victim is receiving medical care, while the body of the deceased has been taken to the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

This incident is a disturbing reminder of the tensions and violence that can erupt during elections. It is essential that the authorities take swift and decisive action to bring those responsible to justice and to prevent further incidents of violence.

The Ghana Police Service has urged calm and assured the public that they are doing everything in their power to ensure the safety and security of all citizens during the elections. As the investigation into this incident continues, it is essential that the public remains vigilant and reports any further incidents of violence or irregularities to the authorities.
