The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly, led by Hon. Dr. Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga, has taken a significant step to improve healthcare delivery in the municipality. On December 3, 2024, the assembly presented 12 sets of essential delivery equipment to the Municipal Health Directorate for distribution to CHPS compounds across the municipality. The presentation took place at the assembly’s forecourt in Akyem Kukurantumi, in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Dr. Umar Babs Bodinga, who also serves as the Chairman of the Health Oversight Committee, explained the rationale behind the initiative. He stated that during their meetings, the lack of delivery equipment in various CHPS compounds was identified as a pressing issue. This need was highlighted by the Municipal Health Director, prompting the assembly to act. He clarified that the equipment was procured using funds from the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT), which is a key funding mechanism aimed at addressing developmental gaps in districts.

The equipment provided includes delivery beds, draining trolleys, BP apparatus (blood pressure monitors), adult and infant weighing scales, lying-in beds, autoclave machines, screens, toddler scales, antenatal beds, height measuring scales, sphygmomanometers, glucometers, and general-purpose trolleys. These items aim to enhance maternal and child healthcare services across the supported facilities.

Hon. Dr. Bodinga emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare delivery, particularly in the newly created Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly. He announced that land had been acquired for the construction of a district hospital under the government’s Agenda 111 project and expressed confidence that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, when elected as the next president, would prioritize its completion. Additionally, he pledged to construct a Municipal Health Directorate complex to alleviate the financial burden of renting private office spaces, which strains the assembly’s common fund. Dr. Bodinga also called on the public to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to ensure continuous and sustainable socio-economic development.

The Municipal Health Director, Mr. Abdul Aziz, expressed gratitude to the assembly and the government for their consistent support. He assured that the equipment would be distributed to CHPS compounds in various communities, including Anyinasin, Old Tafo, Ettukrom, Nobi, Obodanse, Anweabeng, New Tafo Zongo, Tontro, Osiem, Sokode-Juaso, Ati, and Kukurantumi Health Center.

Mr. Aziz pledged to ensure proper maintenance of the equipment and urged the government to continue supporting the health department. He highlighted the importance of these interventions in addressing healthcare challenges and improving access to quality health services, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The funding for the equipment was sourced from the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT), which supports developmental initiatives aimed at addressing key gaps in municipal and district assemblies. This initiative by the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly reflects a broader commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and services in Ghana. By equipping CHPS compounds with essential delivery tools, the assembly is not only addressing immediate healthcare needs but also laying the foundation for long-term health and well-being in the municipality.
