Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has announced that Parliament will reconvene on Monday, December 16, 2024, following an earlier indefinite suspension. This decision comes after Bagbin declined a request from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus for an emergency session before the December 7, 2024, general elections.

According to Bagbin, summoning the House just days before the elections wouldn’t be in the nation’s best interest. He emphasized that the parliamentary calendar recognizes campaign periods as a time for the government and candidates to present their manifestos and account for their governance to the electorate.

Bagbin expressed concerns that the two days suggested by the Leader of Government Business, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, would be insufficient to address the 22 urgent items on the agenda. He noted that handling such a substantial number of issues in a limited timeframe would be impractical.

Parliament will resume after the elections to address all necessary matters before transitioning to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
