Ghanaian dancehall musician Stonebwoy has addressed the ongoing “industry boy” debate surrounding him, which has sparked varied reactions from various industry stakeholders, including his colleague Shatta Wale.

Some critics, including Shatta Wale, have labeled Stonebwoy as the favourite of gatekeepers and key stakeholders within the showbiz industry.

The controversy surrounding the “industry boy” tag was recently reignited following Sally Mann’s disclosure that certain players within the creative arts industry, including the media, have conspired to promote Stonebwoy’s career over that of other artistes.

But in a recent interview on Hitz FM on November 28, 2024, Stonebwoy clarified his stance on the issue, rejecting the ‘industry boy’ tag.

“I’m not an ‘industry boy’ in the sense that an industry sat down to craft me. No. The industry is responsible for the growth and well-being of our creative arts, from the radio stations to the TV stations, all the traditional and modern media,” Stonebwoy stated.

Stonebwoy also addressed such comments often made by Shatta Wale, urging fans to look at the bigger picture.

“We all understand, and he [Shatta Wale] has said it many times, but that’s not the truth. It’s important for fans to be more discerning and constructive in their support, rather than blindly following negative narratives,” he stated.

He emphasised that while he doesn’t identify with the “industry boy” tag, he has chosen to move past the conversation, acknowledging that it has gained traction over time.

“I’m not an industry boy per se, and I can’t see myself as one. But it’s good that I address it, as it’s becoming somewhat of a reality,” he said.

Despite the controversy, Stonebwoy has made it clear that he has a deep love for the music industry and its people.

“The industry loves me, and I love them. I know how to relate. I love that it’s my industry. I can’t create hate for myself within the industry,” he affirmed.
