In Sowutuom, Accra, a New Force Movement campaign rally featuring independent presidential candidate Nana Kwame Bediako, often known as Cheddar, allegedly descended into violence after irate youths interrupted the gathering. During the party’s grassroots recruitment efforts in advance of Ghana’s general elections in 2024, the altercation reportedly took place on November 26, 2024.

The attackers may have been unhappy with unmet promises from previous political involvement, according to eyewitness testimonies. There were reports of harassment and minor injuries among the New Force campaign team members as emotions increased. Although there have been no confirmed official arrests, local officials have started their investigations.

Relatively new to Ghanaian politics, the New Force Movement has earned popularity for taking a strong stand against established political systems. The movement’s founder, Bediako, has framed his campaign as a youth-led effort to relieve disillusioned citizens’ annoyances. In recent interviews, Bediako acknowledged the difficulties of pursuing autonomous political goals, such as sabotage and resistance.

Ghana’s pre-election atmosphere is becoming increasingly unstable, as evidenced by the Sowutuom incident. Such conflicts, according to analysts, are a sign of a larger discontent with governance that is frequently manifested through demonstrations or altercations. Notwithstanding its condemnation of the attack, the New Force Movement is steadfast in their goal of promoting national unity and enacting revolutionary measures.
