With just nine days remaining until Ghanaians head to the polls to elect a new president and Members of Parliament, the Electoral Commission (EC) has called on political parties to ensure that their agents conduct themselves responsibly to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Commissioner of the EC, emphasised the critical roles of party agents in safeguarding the transparency and credibility of the elections.

However, he acknowledged that disruptions sometimes arise due to agents’ lack of understanding of the Commission’s procedures.

He urged political parties and candidates to adequately educate their agents on electoral processes to prevent potential issues at polling stations, according to a report by graphic.com.gh

“We want to use this opportunity to entreat political parties and candidates to educate their agents to conduct themselves well at all the polling stations. At times, the problems that come up are because the agents don’t understand our processes very well,” he noted.

Reiterating the EC’s impartiality, Dr. Asare assured Ghanaians of the Commission’s commitment to delivering peaceful, transparent, and credible elections that reflect the people’s will.

“The Commission does not have any interest in the elections except to ensure that the processes leading to the election of a president and parliamentarians are peaceful and reflect the will of the Ghanaian people,” he noted.

The Deputy Commissioner also pointed out the EC’s collaboration with security agencies through the Election Security Task Force to maintain order and ensure a smooth electoral process.

“We are working in concert with security agencies to ensure that Ghanaians vote in peace, choosing the parliamentarians and the president they want,” he said.

Dr. Asare encouraged registered voters to participate fully in the December 7 polls, reiterating the EC’s readiness to support voters in exercising their democratic rights without hindrances.

He also called on all stakeholders, particularly party agents, to prioritise the nation’s collective interest overs partisan considerations.

As Ghana prepares for this crucial election, the country’s democracy faces another critical test.

The Electoral Commission’s call for responsible conduct, collaboration with security agencies, and commitment to transparency are necessary in ensuring a peaceful process that reflects the will of the people.
