Solar Ayew, younger brother of former Black Stars captain Abedi Ayew, has debunked rumors connecting the Ayew family to an Akan background, revealing that their roots trace back to Paga in the northern part of Ghana.

The Ayew surname has led many, especially Ghanaians, to assume that the family has Akan origins. However, in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah, Solar Ayew clarified that their family belongs to the Kassena tribe, from which their mother also hails.

Addressing these misconceptions, he emphasized the family’s true ancestry.

“This is one of the things we really want to address. If someone asks about us having an Akan connection, the answer is a big no. Our ancestry is from Paga, which means we are Kassenas. Our mother hails from Kassena-Nankana, which is in Navrongo, where they speak Kasem and Frafra, in a village called Kwarania in Navrongo,” he disclosed on Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV.

Solar Ayew also discussed how he and Abedi Ayew named their football clubs, highlighting the family’s collective decision to support Abedi’s team, which contributed to its popularity.

“Abedi’s football club is named Paga Nania, that’s after our father and my football club is named Kwarania. But we all decided to back Paga Nania Football Club,” he further stated.

The Ayew family now boasts a rich legacy in Ghanaian football. Abedi Ayew, one of the greatest footballers in Africa, paved the way, and his three sons have all played for Ghana’s national team.

Although Abedi never featured in a World Cup, his sons have all had the privilege of participating at the prestigious tournament.
