The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has said that the inability of the managers of the economy to manage it properly has led Ghanaians to the current economic hardship.

According to the MP, the current government, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), came into power on the ticket of the economy, and they cannot run away from it now that things are going wayward.

Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, the lawmaker explained that the NPP government came into power when the cedi to the dollar was about 3.8 Ghana cedis to a dollar, and yet they said former President John Mahama had mismanaged the economy.

He further explained that the dollar-to-cedi exchange rate has risen from 3.8 to about 17 cedis to a dollar, adding that the NPP has refused to accept responsibility, blaming it on COVID-19, the Ukraine war, and other factors.

“Even when the cedi to the dollar was about 3.8, they said Mahama had mismanaged the economy. So what is their response now that it is about 17 cedis to a dollar?”

Mr. Sosu also elaborated that the country’s external debt from the time of Kwame Nkrumah to when the NPP government took over was about 120 billion but is now about 780 billion.

“They came at a time when the external debt from Nkrumah’s time was about 120 billion, and they said it was Mahama’s fault and they were not going to borrow. But look at us now.”

He further said Ghanaians are too wise now and would not fall for deceitful words, considering the country’s current debt stock.

“We are wise now and will not fall for any of their deceit. Just look at the debt stock now,” the lawmaker stated.

He then shared how he had to organize a demonstration in his constituency for better roads.

“Where’s Madina’s portion of the infrastructure? You recall I had to lead a demonstration for roads. Just roads, and as of today, that road hasn’t been constructed. This is how abusive this government can be.”
