Despite mounting calls for Black Stars coach Otto Addo’s termination, Nana Akomea, the vice chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) manifesto committee, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to keep him on as coach.

After failing to lead Ghana to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Otto Addo has come under heavy fire. With only three points from six games, the Black Stars finished last in Group F, sparking significant dissatisfaction and demands for a leadership change.

Nana Akomea backed the troubled coach on Joy FM, stressing the importance of stability before the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. We shouldn’t panic just yet, in my opinion.

I am aware that many people are calling for the coach to be removed of his responsibilities,” he stated. “Hey, we still have to qualify for the World Cup. We should keep the coach to lead us through the qualification series, in my opinion.

He maintained that Ghana’s practice of switching coaches regularly when problems arise has never worked. He clarified, “If there is any indication of trouble, we switch the coach and bring in another coach, and then we get into trouble again.”

Therefore, I think we should keep the coach to guide us through the qualifications. We can make a choice if, following that, we terminate the cycle without reservation,” he continued.

Otto Addo’s destiny is anticipated to be decided by the GFA on November 27, 2024, after an inconclusive review meeting earlier this week. In the meantime, the GFA signalled more significant changes to the Black Stars’ leadership structure on Thursday by announcing the dissolution of the management committee. Currently serving a 34-month contract with a 24-month extension option, Otto Addo replaced Chris Hughton earlier this year.
