    By Kwame Sowu

Hope is one of the most important commodities political parties must sell. Not through slogans, campaign promises or carefully choreographed speeches, but through the visible possibility of a better future.

People are more willing to endure hardship, make sacrifices and invest their energies when they believe their efforts will lead somewhere. They will support difficult reforms when they can see the destination. They will make extraordinary contributions when they believe success is attainable.

The problem begins when people can no longer connect today’s sacrifices with tomorrow’s rewards.

A political party may have sound policies, impressive ideas and good intentions. But if ordinary citizens cannot see how these translate into better livelihoods, greater opportunities and a more dignified existence, the political value of those ideas diminishes.

There is, however, an even more frustrating contradiction. What motivation does a person have to make an effort when those expected to facilitate opportunity become obstacles to it? If Ato or Ken can sit on my opportunities, frustrate my proposals or block my deals, however small, simply because they control access or wield influence, why should I bother? Why should I invest my time, resources and ingenuity in a system where success appears to depend less on merit and initiative than on navigating the whims of a few gatekeepers?

This is how hope is destroyed: not necessarily through spectacular failures, but through everyday acts of obstruction, favouritism, gatekeeping and institutional indifference.

Political parties cannot convincingly preach entrepreneurship while their own representatives make it unnecessarily difficult for entrepreneurs to succeed. They cannot ask young people to be ambitious while those with influence frustrate legitimate attempts to create opportunities.

People need a future worth preparing for. Entrepreneurs need an economy worth investing in. Workers need to believe that hard work can improve their circumstances. Everyone needs a reason to believe that tomorrow can be better than today.

Hope is not an alternative to performance. It is what makes performance meaningful to the people.

Ultimately, my position is simple: if I can see success, I will make the effort. But if success depends on pleasing, persuading or navigating the obstruction of powerful individuals, what exactly am I being asked to work towards?

Political parties must understand that people do not simply need promises. They need a fair chance to succeed. And sometimes, the greatest threat to a political party’s promise of hope is the conduct of the very people entrusted to advance it.
