All Star Boxing presents “Haciendo Historia” this Friday on ESPN KnockOut and Canal 4
A lively, well-attended final press conference featuring traditional Nicaraguan folkloric entertainment and a live band set the stage today for “Haciendo Historia,” presented by All Star Boxing, Inc., this Friday, October 30, at the Centro de Convenciones Olof Palme.
Headlining the card, which features five televised fights and three championship bouts, Nicaragua’s Eveling “La Colocha” Ortega (13-5, 3 KOs) challenges Mexico’s Alma Melissa “La Leona” Meraz (11-4-2, 2 KOs) for the WBA interim women’s light flyweight world championship in a 10-round bout at 108 pounds.
Ortega, the WBA’s No. 4-ranked challenger, enters the bout riding a seven-fight winning streak. After becoming Nicaragua’s first female WBO Latino champion in October 2023, the Chontales native now seeks to become the first Nicaraguan woman to win a world boxing championship. Defending champion Meraz, of Mexicali, Mexico, stands between Ortega and history as she pursues the milestone before a passionate home crowd.
Tuto Zabala Jr., president of All Star Boxing, Inc., has been promoting boxing in Nicaragua since 2009, staging numerous ESPN-televised shows over the past 17 years and bringing Nicaraguan talent to international audiences. That commitment includes helping present Nicaragua’s first women’s world-title fight on December 19, 2009, when Costa Rica’s Hanna Gabriels stopped Argentina’s Gabriela Zapata in four rounds to win the WBO welterweight championship in Managua.
Now, Zabala and All Star Boxing return with another historic opportunity for women’s boxing—this time, with a Nicaraguan fighter pursuing world championship glory on home soil.
Four additional televised bouts
