Australians wanting to travel to Saudi Arabia have been urged to cancel their plans amid a ‘volatile’ security situation.
On Monday, the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website updated its travel advice to ‘Do Not Travel’ after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels repeatedly struck Saudi Arabia’s main international airport earlier this month.
‘The Houthis have threatened to target Saudi airports and airspace,’ the warning read.
‘Air travel is significantly disrupted at all major airports, with regular airspace closures, flight cancellations and delays.
‘We advise do not travel to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh due to recent security incidents that have disrupted airport operations. Exercise extreme caution travelling to and from all airports in Saudi Arabia.
‘You should postpone any planned travel to Saudi Arabia, including travel for religious purposes.’
Individuals who choose to fly to Saudi Arabia despite the advice are urged to do not leave for the airport until they have reconfirmed their flight with their airline or travel provider.
More to come.
