Most of what Labour leaders say in their conference speeches is pure tripe, marinaded in bilge (the other lot are not much different but we’ll deal with that some other time).

They can’t fix the NHS or the economy, they don’t even understand policing and criminal justice, they dislike the Armed Forces and they long ago decided to abolish proper education.

The bits you should be frightened of are the ones they slip in that mean more power for our Leftist elite. This they can do.

One horror screamed out from amid the jungle of slogans which Andrew Burnham displayed to us last week – his desire to abolish proper British elections.

That is what switching to ‘Proportional Representation’ actually means.

Our ancient Parliament has one overriding purpose – to represent the real divisions in our uniquely free country and to stop leaders getting too big for their boots.

This means two big parties, genuinely opposed to each other, which take turns in office. It also means that the voters can sack the Government when they get tired of it.

In this way politicians live in constant fear (as they should) of losing their fat jobs, cars and privileges. It means a strong Opposition which makes life difficult for the Government.

Burnham calls it ‘reform’, but it’s really the abolition of proper British elections: PETER HITCHENS

Burnham’s desire to abolish proper British elections to be replaced by proportional representation means no strong opposition and removes the ability to sack the government

This is good news for freedom of speech and bad news for poorly drafted laws, which that tough Opposition can shred and revise.

Now, as I have been urging and predicting for years, this country needs two wholly new parties.

Labour and the Tories are clapped out, represent nobody but themselves, and are far too close to each other.

A new force is emerging on the Right and may take shape at the coming election. When it does, Labour’s weary north London Marxism will at last be seriously threatened. It has relied for decades on being anti-Tory to get out its remaining loyalists. Nothing else holds it together.

Its ancient incantations and spells no longer work and it is plainly terrified of what Reform UK might do to it.

This is why Mr Burnham is reaching for the lever marked ‘electoral reform’.

This is designed to make it impossible for a Government to be flung out. No more removal vans in Downing Street on the day after an election if this goes ahead.

Instead, months of slippery negotiations between the parties – ending with most of the same people in power as before.

Likewise, under PR, Parliament itself becomes a conspiracy of the elite against the people. No more proper Opposition, no more genuinely hostile debate. The passions of the people will be kept out.

Our politicians, already hard to tell apart, will become so similar that they will need labels on their heads to let us know which party they are from.

This isn’t minor. It is crucial. Don’t let them do it.

Blue Lights fades into a dull, woke soap opera

Police drama Blue Lights has gone woke. Last week's episode showed 'refugees' teaming up with militant 'Catholics' and 'Protestants' against the police

Police drama Blue Lights has gone woke. Last week’s episode showed ‘refugees’ teaming up with militant ‘Catholics’ and ‘Protestants’ against the police

The police drama Blue Lights, set in Belfast, began well with original stories and a likeable cast.

Alas, it is now turning into another politically correct soap opera.

In the week Northern Ireland saw a renewed confrontation between ‘Loyalists’ and ‘Republicans’, we got a drama about ‘refugees’ in which militant ‘Protestants’ and ‘Catholics’ allied against the police and the heroine was a ‘refugee’ from Syria.

I have now run out of inverted commas.

    The BBC’s stupid cannabis censorship

One day, when even the stupidest people grasp that marijuana is a terrifying, deeply dangerous drug, some may remember that I was one of the tiny few who warned against the unhinged, greedy plan to legalise it.

This plan can’t be far from success, with all its misery of wrecked families, destroyed minds and mad violence.

And one of the bodies which won’t be able to escape blame for this avoidable tragedy is the BBC. Of course, nobody in the BBC is a marijuana user. The organisation is wholly drug-free.

So the only explanation for its bias on the issue must be stupidity.

Many times on this page I have documented programmes in which the agenda of the drug legalisers has been advanced in discussion programmes and dramas.

But last week the BBC came up with something new, which looks suspiciously like censorship.

Many people are now, far too late, waking up to the link between marijuana use and incurable mental illness.

An observant few have begun to grasp the even more frightening instances of crazy violence by mentally ill people whose minds have been overthrown by dope.

I owe what follows to an amazing website called News Sniffer, which tracks changes in stories published on the web and later amended. It found that a BBC website report on a crazy killer began by prominently mentioning the killer’s use of marijuana – and then dropped it.

The mad killer is called Alexander Lewis-Ranwell. He slew twins Dick and Roger Carter, 84, and Anthony Payne, 80, in Exeter in 2019.

Mad killer Alexander Lewis-Ranwell murdered three pensioners in a 2019 Exeter killing spree. The BBC initially reported that he used marijuana but later swapped the word for 'drug'

Mad killer Alexander Lewis-Ranwell murdered three pensioners in a 2019 Exeter killing spree. The BBC initially reported that he used marijuana but later swapped the word for ‘drug’

All three blameless men died of severe head injuries inflicted by an insane drug abuser who had (as so often) been allowed by the authorities to roam until he committed a serious crime. He has now been classified as insane and ‘detained’.

But there will be more like him as marijuana use spreads.

The corporation took three days to come up with this excuse for removing the word ‘cannabis’ from its report: ‘This article was produced during an ongoing inquest… and updated to reflect new information.

‘Reference to cannabis was added as part of the custody officer’s evidence but, as Lewis-Ranwell’s mother’s testimony became the focus, we updated our report to show this while keeping references about “drug-induced psychosis”.’

It would answer no further questions or I would have asked why it could not have used the word ‘cannabis’ instead of ‘drug’ in the new version.

I think I know the answer.
