    Pete Edochie visits Emmanuel Armah

Veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie has extended a helping hand to ailing Ghanaian actor Emmanuel Armah. He offered financial support to the veteran screen star during a visit to Ghana.

Edochie, who is currently in the country, made time to visit Armah after arriving in Ghana, in a gesture that brought together two veteran figures whose careers have been closely associated with the growth of African cinema.

During the visit, the veteran Nollywood actor presented Armah with money to support him as he continues to deal with his health challenges. He then went a step further by adding another cash gift that had earlier been given to him, choosing instead to pass it on to the ailing Ghanaian actor.

Edochie’s gesture comes at a time when Armah has spent several years away from active screen work because of his condition.

Armah’s health struggles became a matter of public concern several years ago after he suffered a stroke that affected his movement and later his speech.

Reports about his condition first gained wider attention in 2017 when he was admitted to the 37 Military Hospital. Following his discharge, he was reportedly taken to a facility in Kasoa in the Central Region for further treatment. Around that period, colleagues and well-wishers visited him and presented him with a wheelchair, water and financial assistance to help with his recovery and medical needs.

For some time, the exact nature of Armah’s illness was not publicly clear. His wife, Stella Amina Anakwa, later confirmed in 2020 that the actor had been battling a stroke. She said he had been dealing with the condition for several years and that it had left him bedridden.

The illness significantly changed the life of an actor who had once been a familiar face on Ghanaian screens. Armah built a reputation through appearances in movies including Fresh Trouble, Things Men Do, Beyond Love, Shadows from the Past and Every Woman Wants Me. His performances made him one of the recognisable actors of Ghana’s earlier movie era.

As his health deteriorated, however, he gradually disappeared from the screen.
