The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has called for stronger strategic leadership and institutional cohesion within the GAF to enable it to respond effectively to the changing security environment.
He said the increasingly complex nature of security threats required the GAF to regularly review its policies and strategic approaches to ensure that they remained relevant and fit for purpose.
The CDS made the call at the maiden Ghana Forces Generals Convention in Accra yesterday, held under the theme, “Adaptive Leadership in a Complex Security Environment: The Role of Generals in Shaping Ghana’s Future.”
Lt. Gen. Agyapong said the convention was designed to provide senior military leaders with an opportunity to exchange ideas and assess the effectiveness of existing practices rather than instruct them on matters they already knew.
According to him, the experience of senior military officers remained an important asset but had to be complemented by learning and adaptation to remain relevant to the demands of modern warfare.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong added that the convention would address critical areas, including intelligence and the handling of classified information, military justice, release and retirement procedures, ethical leadership, command experiences and contemporary military administration.
He noted that the modern battlefield no longer supported purely single-service solutions, making integrated planning, coordinated execution and a shared strategic vision necessary for military success.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, disclosed that an electronic warfare department was being established in the northern sector to enhance surveillance and provide the military with the necessary “eyes and ears” on the ground to detect potential threats early.
He noted that the measures were intended to ensure that Ghana was not caught off guard by emerging security threats.
He said the military would continue to strengthen its preparedness and coordination to protect the country and respond effectively to threats to national security.
The Director-General of Training of the GAF, Brigadier General William Kwabiah, said he expected the convention to strengthen teamwork among the generals, stressing that although the military was already working together, regular interaction through such platforms would further improve cooperation.
According to him, the seminar would also expose the generals to perspectives from speakers outside the military, which he described as important because the military operated within a civilian environment.
He said understanding civilian perspectives would help ensure that the actions, opinions and activities of the GAF remained aligned with the country’s civilian authorities.
