Mzbel says she has reached a point where she would rather stay away from partisan politics altogether, after years of openly campaigning for and defending the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The musician said her political involvement came at a significant cost to her career, claiming that she lost fans, performance opportunities and business prospects because of her decision to publicly identify with the NDC.
“I loved NDC. It doesn’t mean I hate NDC now, but I don’t want to have anything to do with any political party anymore. It has caused me more harm than good,” she said in an interview with Kafui Dey.

According to Mzbel, her fan base was not always politically divided along party lines. She said she had supporters who identified with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before she became vocal about her own political affiliation.
She believes publicly declaring her support for the NDC contributed to some of those fans walking away. She also recalled losing invitations to perform at events linked to NPP supporters.
One such incident, she said, happened when she was booked to perform at Mövenpick. Her appearance was reportedly cancelled shortly before the event after organisers informed her that a prominent NPP figure would be the guest of honour.
“A few days to the show, they called me that their guest of honour is one big NPP woman and because of her, they have to take me off the show,” she said.
Mzbel further claimed that her political identity affected her career beyond Ghana. According to her, some international performance opportunities were cancelled despite organisers having already promoted her on event flyers.
“So if I didn’t come out to say that I am NDC, defending my party and all of that, I would have been doing well. I lost half of my fan base,” she added.
Her frustrations, however, were not limited to the impact of partisan politics on her career.

Mzbel said her loyalty to the NDC did not shield her from attacks by individuals who supported the party. She alleged that some party members physically and verbally attacked her, while others insulted her on social media and threatened to beat her.
“And the party I followed too, well, it didn’t do me any good. You know, because there are people in the party who physically and verbally attacked me, insulted me, called me out on social media, threatened to beat me, and all of that. So if these same people are NDC people and they are doing this to me on social media, I mean, why would anybody want to work with me?” she asked.
Despite her current position, Mzbel said her attachment to the NDC was not something she developed recently.
She traced her political leanings to her childhood in Jamestown, where the influence of former President Jerry John Rawlings and the NDC was particularly strong.
“I just love the party because I grew up with the party. It was Rawlings and in Jamestown it’s all about Rawlings and NDC so it became like a religion for us,” she stated.
Her political activism eventually became more pronounced during election campaigns. Mzbel said she noticed that her political comments regularly attracted significant attention online, prompting her to use her platform to promote messages from the party and its leaders.
“So I followed it passionately and I realised that during campaigns, anything I say goes viral. So I keep using my platform to be sharing stuff that, you know, whoever is leading the party then is promoting. And that is how it started,” she recounted.
