Behdad Eghbali and his Clearlake Capital group have taken full control of Chelsea after purchasing Todd Boehly and Mark Walter’s minority shares in the club.

Boehly, Walter and Hansjorg Wyss owned 38.5 per cent of the Premier League side collectively. The other 61.5 per cent was held by Clearlake, who are led by Eghbali and Jose E Feliciano.

Daily Mail Sport reported last week that a sale process was ongoing and Clearlake Capital have now bought out Boehly and Walter in a deal that is believed to be worth around £1billion. Wyss has not sold his shares and is remaining part of the ownership, however.

In a statement, the club said: ‘Chelsea Football Club today announced affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. (“Clearlake”) will acquire the ownership interest of Todd Boehly. Hansjorg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner in the ownership group.

‘As part of the transition, Clearlake will also acquire Mark Walter’s ownership interest and therefore acquire full control of the club.’

Clearlake have financed the purchase itself, with Eghbali and Feliciano – who hailed Boehly as ‘an important partner’ – said to have put forward large investments.

In their statement, Chelsea added: ‘In 2022, Todd Boehly and Clearlake joined together to lead the historic acquisition of Chelsea – successfully navigating an unprecedented period of uncertainty imposed by outside political events – and Todd organised his chairmanship with an unwavering commitment to this ownership group’s fundamental belief that the supporters are at the heart of everything the club does.

‘The owners have worked together with the shared objective of building a sustainable foundation for long-term sporting success.

‘Under their joint-ownership, substantial investment has been made across the men’s and women’s senior and youth squads, Chelsea’s training facilities at Cobham, medical and player-support resources, academy development and pathways, and the sporting and business leadership of the club.

‘Todd Boehly now leaves his role as chairman with Chelsea well positioned for the next phase of development. The progress made over the past four years reflects the shared commitment of Clearlake, Boehly and the wider ownership group and the leadership, staff, coaches and players at Chelsea.

‘Clearlake intends to continue building on the strategic course the club is now on and realising the ambition that the ownership group has developed together.’

Boehly said: ‘It has been an honour to serve as chairman of Chelsea Football Club. I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans.

‘I have valued my partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, and the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the club. I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.’

While Boehly was Chelsea chairman and was the original face of the 2022 takeover, Eghbali has been the most hands-on of all the co-owners. He often liaises with the sporting directorship team and is a consistent attendee at games both at home and away.

In a statement issued to Bloomberg last week, a spokesperson for Walter confirmed that he was seeking a sale with an agreement close.

Daily Mail Sport had also reported that the pair were expecting to make a minor profit on their original investment. The entire consortium purchased Chelsea for £2.5billion in 2022 with an additional £1.75bn committed to investment in the club.

Boehly tried his hand at being involved in transfers early on – he once admitted to buying Marc Cucurella from Brighton because Manchester City also wanted him – though Eghbali has largely led the show since that early experiment.

Reports have suggested Boehly and Eghbali held a strained relationship and there had been speculation surrounding one buying out the other for around two years now.
