Ghanaian comedian and actor Akrobeto has backed Prophet Kumchacha’s controversial assertion that women who repeatedly ask their partners for money could be engaging in a relationship that resembles prostitution.

Akrobeto shared his views while hosting his programme on UTV, where he recounted a personal experience involving a woman he had recently started dating.

The comedian said their relationship began after meeting the woman and communicating for about two weeks. Although they lived in different cities, they eventually agreed to become a couple.

However, Akrobeto said the relationship quickly took a financial turn.

Just a week after they became partners, he said the woman approached him with a request for money to help her relocate from her current accommodation.

“She called and said she needs to move from where she currently is, she has saved up some money but she needs a top up. I asked how much and she said GH¢3,000,” he recounted.

Akrobeto said he eventually sent the GH¢3,000 despite having some concerns about the request. He explained that he considered it part of the responsibility that came with being in a relationship.

The woman later travelled to visit him.

But according to Akrobeto, another financial conversation the following day changed his perception of the relationship.

He said he called her to find out how she was doing, only for her to complain that the money he had given her was inadequate because she had a child to cater for.

“She said she wasn’t fine. When I asked what was wrong, she said, ‘Don’t you know I have a child? How would GH¢400 be enough for me?’” he said.

The response, Akrobeto said, left him questioning why he was expected to take financial responsibility for a child he had no parental connection to.

“In my mind I was like, why am I responsible for your child? What sort of entitlement is that?” he said.

Although he initially told her that he would send additional money the following day, Akrobeto said he made a different decision immediately after their conversation ended.

He blocked her contact and deleted her number.

The actor said the experience reinforced his belief that romantic relationships should not automatically create an expectation that one partner must continuously finance the other.

He argued that people should not approach relationships with a sense of entitlement to another person’s income, particularly when that expectation has not been mutually agreed upon.

“No one has any right to be entitled to my money. I am not a politician. I have no share in the national cake. So no one should demand money from me like they pay their taxes to me. I work hard for my own money,” he said.

Akrobeto then returned to Kumchacha’s earlier comments, saying women who view relationships primarily as a means of obtaining money should be upfront about their intentions rather than presenting those expectations after a romantic connection has been established.

“If you want to go into prostitution, announce it so we are all aware and know what to expect. Don’t wait for a man to show interest in you and then start demanding money from him. Kumchacha is right,” he stressed.
