Fight Club OC added some fire to an already fiery August from the Hangar at the OC Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa, CA on August 27th. Five ferocious combat sports contests took place, and, when the final bell sounded, everyone in attendance knew that they had witnessed something special.

Opening the show was a 4 round, Light Heavyweight, boxing clash between Los Angeles’s Frank Chagolla in his (0-1) against fellow LA native Fernando Estrella (1-1). Things didn’t take long to reach a boil when these two combatants came out to ring center and got down. Each fighter had their moments in each round. However, Chagolla expended a lot of energy in the first round and that came back to haunt him down the stretch. Estrella did just a bit more and was awarded a decision over his erstwhile foe.

Contest number two saw Santa Ana’s favorite son Johnny Canas (10-0 3KOs) take on Norfolk’s Nicholas Sullivan (9-3 2KOs) in a 6 round, junior welterweight match. These warriors met in ring center and Sullivan proceeded to stuff a left hand in the face of Canas. This continued throughout the first minute of round one, but then Canas figured things out and and started countering. Each round was competitive but Canas did just enough to win it. However, in the fifth round he sealed it up with a knockdown and that put Sullivan in defensive mode. Canas took the sixth and was awarded the decision for his solid effort.

After that, we moved to the super middleweight division for a 4 round contest featuring Corona’s Alexander Topete (2-1) vs. Salinas, Ca’s Edson Ortiz who was making his pro debut (he falls to 0-1). Topete was looking to notch a win and Ortiz was seeking to impress in his first pro contest. Their bout was a hotly contested affair in which Ortiz pressed forward, and Topete timed him, countered him, and clocked him for the duration of the fight. Each contestant had their moments, but Topete did more, he was busier when it counted and that’s how he got the decision.

Flyweight Jordan Fuentes (8-0 2KOs) from Fresno, Ca engaged Cesar Fidel Chavarria (6-3 4KOs) of Ramos Arizpe, Mexico in a 6 round, co-headlining bout. This was a solid fight before the main event and it was a high level chess match. Chavarria spent a lot of the fight being willing, but waiting a bit too long as he looked for openings. Fuentes steadily picked him apart, landing quick punches but only doing it one at a time. His work rate was more consistent over the six round distance and that netted him a decision win.

This night’s 4 round, Tequila Mandala Young Champions bout happened in the lightweight ranks when Ryan Jones (2-0) from Costa Mesa took on Ivan Anaya (0-1) from Salina’s, CA in his pro debut. Fighters who close out the show at Fight Club OC know they need to show up and show out. That’s exactly what both combatants attempted to do. There was a lot of back and forth action here, but it was Ryan Jones who was busier, landed the harder punches, and closed the show stronger. He took a unanimous decision for his hard work!
