Two-division world champion Marlon “The Nightmare” Tapales, a former WBO bantamweight world champion and former IBF super bantamweight world champion, has withdrawn from his scheduled appearance in Ballarat, Australia, on Saturday, August 29.
Tapales, who previously challenged Naoya Inoue in a super bantamweight world title unification bout, has made the difficult decision to withdraw following the tragic passing of his 30-year-old sister.
The sad news was confirmed by Troy Kovacs, a close personal friend and confidant of Tapales.
“A tremendous amount of work has gone into bringing this event together and giving Australian boxing fans the opportunity to see Marlon compete,” said promoter Peter Maniatis. “However, some things are far more important than boxing.
“Right now, Marlon’s family, health and wellbeing must come first. We fully support him in taking the time he needs to be with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult period.
“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with Marlon and his entire family.
“We will do everything we can to reschedule Marlon’s Australian appearance and give his many fans and supporters the opportunity to see this superstar fight on Australian soil in the future.
“Thank you for your understanding, compassion and continued support.
“My thoughts are with Marlon and his family. My motto has always been that family is the number one priority. Boxing will always be there.”
