Marcus Rashford has thanked Jamie Carragher for shutting down talk about his future at Man United after Gary Neville was keen to dig into the subject.

The England international returned to Old Trafford after his Barcelona loan expired and his £325,000-a-week wages have made it tricky to find a new club.

Last year, it seems incredibly unlikely that Rashford would be able to settle back at Man United again but he featured in their last pre-season friendly and looks set for reintegration.

On The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, there was a terse but light-hearted exchange between Carragher and Neville.

The Liverpool legend lamented: ‘Oh f***ing hell. Can we do a podcast without mentioning Rashford? Stop it! Oh my god. It’s like the Trent and Rashford – there was like a little part of the podcast – the Trent part or the Rashford part.’

Neville then joked: ‘How is Trent?’

Thanks, Jamie. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day 😭 https://t.co/GTqrKhbZEE

    Carragher: ‘Oh my God.’

Neville: ‘No, but he’s come back to United.’

Carragher: ‘So what? Oh my God. He’s just a good player for Man United!’

The clip was then posted on social media and Rashford himself saw it, prompting him to comment.

He wrote: ‘Thanks, Jamie. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day.’

Rashford was disappointed Barcelona chose not to trigger the £26m option they had to buy him in the summer.

Instead, the club splashed out £69m on his England team-mate Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

Unless a club come in for Rashford in the final two weeks of the transfer window, he will remain at United.

The 28-year-old could yet force his way into Carrick’s starting line-up and the manager said: ‘He’s a very good player, and I think if you’re going to have a career over 10 or 15 years, there’s going to be times when things go in a direction and maybe a different direction.

‘I think there are ups and downs, and that doesn’t judge you as a one-off kind of judgment. It’s what happens over time, and now we’re in a positive place as a group, and Marcus can offer us so much. He has done, and he can do again, so in that respect, it’s quite exciting.

‘He came in, he’s trained really well. I’ve known him a long time, like I’ve known some of the others a long time, so I don’t treat him any different to anybody else, but it’s been good to have him around the group again this week. So I’m really positive with that.’
