Abena Moet has questioned the growing emphasis on women’s financial contributions in marriage, arguing that a woman should not be judged by how much money or property she brings into a relationship.

The Ghanaian media personality made the comments during a discussion on GHOne TV, where she challenged the expectation that women should disclose their salaries or accumulate assets before getting married.

According to her, traditional marriage roles were not built around women arriving with wealth. She argued that women were historically expected to contribute to the family in other significant ways.

“It is today that education and civilization have brought change. Ideally, I am not expected to come into the marriage with anything. I am not supposed to go into marriage with a cent. I don’t have to bring money or property. I am supposed to come as I am,” she said.

Her position comes amid wider conversations about financial transparency between couples, particularly the expectations placed on women to reveal their income and demonstrate financial independence before or during marriage.

Abena Moet pointed to the different responsibilities traditionally assigned to boys and girls while growing up, saying boys were often encouraged to seek opportunities outside the home, while girls were prepared for responsibilities linked to managing the household.

She mentioned cooking, cleaning and caring for the family as some of the duties traditionally associated with women, suggesting that such contributions should not be dismissed simply because they do not come with a monetary value.

The media personality also placed emphasis on motherhood, describing a woman’s ability to have children and help establish a family as a substantial contribution to marriage.

“I brought my womb, my body, and my ability to create life. That is why I brought everything to the table. So, with all my education, I have dropped it to come and have your kids, to continue your line for you. I came with everything that enables us to build a family,” she stated.

Abena Moet’s comments suggest that the value a woman brings into a marriage should not be reduced to her salary, bank balance or property ownership.

She further argued that marriage does not automatically give a husband the right to demand details of his wife’s earnings, maintaining that women should retain some control over their personal finances.

“I am not obliged to tell you my salary,” Moet further stated.
