Long before Max Dowman began making headlines, the warnings started to come from within Arsenal’s senior ranks.

In May 2024 this baby-faced prospect, then just 14, was invited to join Mikel Arteta’s first-team training and, so the whispers went, was someone we would be hearing a whole lot more about for years to come.

Such claims around young talent can often be taken with a pinch of salt. As Arsene Wenger would often say when he was in Arteta’s shoes, you don’t know who a player really is until they’re 24, and for Dowman that was still a decade away.

But with Dowman, it’s different. Very, very different. Close to Lamine Yamal territory. Yes, really. The numbers don’t usually lie, and the very early milestones Dowman has already beaten the Spaniard to suggest a similar trajectory.

The Barcelona star made his league debut against Real Betis on April 29, 2023, aged 15 years and 290 days. Dowman did so against Leeds on August 23, 2025, aged 15 years and 235 days – 55 days fewer. Yamal made his first senior start against Cadiz on August 20, 2023, aged 16 years and 38 days. Dowman achieved the same feat against Brighton in the Carabao Cup on October 29, 2025, aged 15 years and 302 days – 101 days fewer.

But now, the 16-year-old attacker is no longer Arsenal’s best-kept secret. He enters the new season with expectations rising rapidly – for club and country – after a series of eye-catching first-team performances at the back end of last season, which have continued in this pre-season.

The Gunners have long believed Dowman possesses something extraordinary. Now, they are preparing to find out just how far he really can go.

In July 2025, Arsenal began stepping up their efforts to prepare the then 15-year-old and his camp for the spotlight that was about to land on him.

There were flashes through the early months of the season – winning a penalty in that debut against Leeds, becoming Arsenal’s youngest ever starter against Brighton and then the Champions League’s youngest player a month later – but the hype machine did not hit overdrive until March 14, at home to Everton in the Premier League.

Brought on at 0-0 in the midst of a nerve-jangling title race, Dowman’s cross created Viktor Gyokeres’ 89th-minute goal to break the deadlock before he scored perhaps the most cathartic goal of Arsenal’s title win, streaking clear of an Everton defence from a corner that Jordan Pickford had gone up for, and tapping into an empty net. Now he was the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer, and there were even calls for him to be a bolter in Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad.

And all this while having GCSEs to sit just a couple of months later (he gets his results on Thursday, the day before Arsenal’s Premier League campaign starts at home to Coventry City). Sources say that Dowman would sometimes feel stretched having had to juggle schoolwork alongside first-team football, sometimes on the bench for a late kick-off and then up early for school in the morning. That is no longer the case. It’s understood Dowman will not be doing higher education such as A-levels so he can fully focus on football.

With that, there is hope internally that he can really push on this season, at the age that Yamal also announced himself as arguably the world’s most-promising footballing talent.

At 16, the Spaniard made 22 league starts, and a barely believable Euros campaign followed in the summer of 2024, where Yamal became the youngest player to both appear and score at the tournament, before providing an assist to help Spain beat England in the final, the day after his 17th birthday.

It would be difficult to expect the same from Dowman, but having edged Yamal on the earlier records, the coming season could well be ground-breaking for the Englishman.

He has the required temperament, a player who is said to be highly critical of himself, and has had to adapt in an Arteta setup where standards are sky-high and demands unrelenting. ‘You could say, “Great performance” and he’ll be like, “Nah I could’ve done this more, this more”,’ a source said.

The pre-season camp has emboldened the hype around the forward. Dowman has started all five friendlies and been one of Arsenal’s most dangerous attacking players in all of them.

From kick-off against Girona, Dowman pressed hard from the front, an aspect of the game that he struggled with last season. His flank would often be exposed on defensive transitions, but he’s worked on improving his work rate off the ball.

In the match against Borussia Dortmund, Dowman groaned in frustration when Gyokeres mistimed a shot. There’s a confidence now, a sense of belonging for this child among a group of men.

Yet, it’s Dowman’s desire to drive at opposition backlines which has been consistent across the matches. His willingness to take players on and bounce back when things don’t go to plan has earned the respect of his peers.

In Dublin, in a 3-1 defeat by Real Betis, Dowman was the bright spark. His tight dribbling style, at speed, is hard to contain. Girona felt the same too, as he weaved his way around the opposition. He assisted Kai Havertz with a sublime through-ball and then in the second half a trademark dribble drove him to the edge of the box, where he fired into the bottom corner. Sandwiched between these two moments were a series of dribbles forward and threatening passes.

With Bukayo Saka recovering from a tough period with injuries and Noni Madueke having failed to nail down the right-wing spot, Dowman has a chance to stake his claim in the first month of the season.

If he were to start against Man City on Sunday and grasp his moment, Madueke could find it tricky to reclaim his spot.

Last season, Arsenal were very careful around the need to balance Dowman’s exposure, and consider the welfare of a minor. This time around, the handbrake looks set to be lifted. There is a belief that Dowman is ready to take the next step, aided by the players around him.

Martin Odegaard, who had the world’s attention on him as a 15-year-old kid from Norway joining Real Madrid, is well placed to understand the peculiar pressures that come with being labelled a prodigy before you are old enough to drive. Saka has helped Dowman settle in the first team, aware of what it’s like to be a Hale End kid thrust into the limelight and carrying the weight of expectation.

Declan Rice has been another reassuring presence, spending time with Dowman off the pitch and even supporting him around academy games last season. It is these seniors who can make a 16-year-old feel he belongs in a dressing room that he still isn’t allowed to get changed in until he turns 18.

He’s developing quickly physically, too. His frame is said to have got stronger over the summer, an essential for first-team football at Premier League level. He is able to shrug off players much older than himself which has impressed staff in matches and training.

For now, the comparisons with Yamal remain just that. But if Dowman can translate his remarkable early promise into consistent Premier League impact, the coming months could mark the beginning of something truly extraordinary.
