A Kosovan politician threw eggs at the acting prime minister in the country’s parliament this week as attempts to form a new government remain deadlocked.

Albin Kurti, leader of Kosovo’s ruling Left-wing party Vetevendosje, was scheduled to announce a candidate for a new speaker on Thursday but instead asked for more time for MPs to reach a consensus on a new president.

The latest elections, held on June 7, took place after parliament failed to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline.

They came after the chamber remained gridlocked through much of 2025, when no party had enough seats to elect officials or form a government.

An election was called for December, but fresh polls were held in June after lawmakers failed to agree on a new president.

As Mr Kurti – whose party, which roughly translates as ‘self-determination’, won 53 of the 120 available seats – asked for an extension in the chamber on Thursday, he said: ‘Consultations are continuing and we have not yet reached an agreement [on the president]. Therefore, I am asking for additional time to avoid new elections.’

But his announcement meant matters boiled over for one MP, as the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK)’s Time Kadrijaj furiously approached him as he sat down.

Ms Kadrijaj reached into her handbag, pulled out an egg and threw it towards Mr Kurti.

As other members of his party tried to intervene, she chucked two more in quick succession.

A scramble to protect the acting PM then ensued, with multiple MPs stepping in to try and calm the situation.

But not to be deterred, Ms Kadrijaj pulled out two more eggs which she threw towards Mr Kurti, before she was led away by security guards.

    The session was then adjourned.

Mr Kurti has been attempting to form a coalition and needs 61 votes to have a speaker and government elected.

Under Kosovan legislation, parliament must be constituted within 30 days of the final results of the June parliamentary elections being confirmed, which happened on July 8. That deadline has now passed, but with no consequences written into the constitution, it is unclear what will happen next.

There is a two-month deadline from the day of confirmation to elect a president, with new elections automatically triggered if this does not take place.

In the most recent elections Vetevendosje’s most likely partner, The Democratic League of Kosovo, secured 18 seats.

Mr Kurti has so far met with leader Lumir Abdixhiku twice but with no breakthrough.

The opposition, the Kosovo Democratic Party, secured 22 seats.
