Coventry are set to break their transfer record for the fourth time in this window after agreeing a £23m fee with Danish side, Nordsjaelland, for the Ghana midfielder, Caleb Yirenkyi.

The deal for Yirenkyi, who impressed during the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign and scored the winning goal against Panama in the group stage, is set to be a record for the Danish top flight and comes after Coventry have already spent almost £60m on the winger Loum Tchaouna, the defender Aurèle Amenda and the goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Yirenkyi, who was named young player of the year in the Danish league last season, will travel to Coventry in the coming hours to complete his move.

The 20-year-old is a product of the Right to Dream academy in Ghana and has been with Nordsjaelland since 2024.

It is understood that the Coventry manager, Frank Lampard, has spoken to his former Chelsea teammate Michael Essien, who is now working as a coach at Nordsjaelland, about what Yirenkyi could bring to his newly promoted side.

Brighton and Everton have also been linked with him in the past.-Guardian
