An innocent woman and an officer have been injured after a car hit speeds of 100mph during a 45-minute chase through 30mph streets in Salford, police have said.

Greater Manchester Police‘s Tactical Intercept Unit saw a car driving ‘dangerously and erratically’ at around 10.30am this morning.

The driver failed to stop for officers, sparking a 45-minute chase, which was joined by ten police cars as well as helicopters from the National Police Air Service.

The driver, who was travelling along East Lancashire Road, drove on the wrong side of the road and around several roundabouts, the force added.

He is also said to have driven through an active underground supermarket car park during the daytime.

The suspect’s car also crashed into another vehicle, injuring one woman. The driver also reversed-rammed into an unmarked police vehicle, causing minor damage.

The pursuit was brought to an end after a stinger, which left one officer with an injury, was successfully launched, bringing the car to a halt.

A 36-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and failing to stop. He remains in custody.

An officer was also taken to hospital for treatment after suffering a hand injury when the stinger was dragged during the incident.

Police Sergeant Neil Molloy, of the Specialist Operations Team’s Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit, said: ‘This level of driving is obviously extremely dangerous, and I’m thankful to report that no one was seriously hurt during this pursuit.

‘The reckless actions of this man put members of the public at risk, and we’re incredibly lucky that no one suffered serious injuries as a result of his actions.

‘Driving in this manner through built-up residential areas is completely unacceptable, and I am pleased that our officers acted swiftly and professionally to bring the incident to a safe conclusion, secure an arrest and seize the vehicle.’
