Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has admitted he is disappointed that Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo chose to represent England instead of Ghana at international level.

Speaking on the issue of dual-nationality players, Okraku acknowledged the growing challenge African countries face in convincing talented foreign-born players with Ghanaian roots to commit to the Black Stars. He described Mainoo’s decision as painful for Ghana football supporters, considering the midfielder’s heritage and potential impact on the national team.

Mainoo, who was eligible to play for Ghana through his family background, opted to represent England and has since become an important part of the Three Lions squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Okraku also touched on the upcoming World Cup clash between Ghana and England, describing it as a special fixture that will attract global attention. Ghana and England have been drawn together in Group L alongside Croatia and Panama.

The GFA president stressed the need for Ghana to continue improving its structures and player engagement strategies to remain competitive in attracting dual-nationality talents capable of strengthening the Black Stars for future tournaments.
