Stephen Hawking‘s former home, where he spent his final years, has been listed for sale at a guide price of £2.5million.

The five-bedroom home in the Newnham area of Cambridge was Hawking’s home until his death in 2018 aged 76.

Listed by estate agents Bidwells, the detached house is described as ‘highly individual and architecturally interesting’ with exposed timber beams.

It also boasts vaulted ceilings, skylights and three reception rooms with two bathrooms, a fireplace, solid oak flooring and a mature garden.

The house lies on one of Cambridge’s most sought-after roads just half a mile from the city centre.

Hawking spent more than 50 years at Cambridge University, arriving in 1962 as a PhD student.

Previously sold for £2million in 2020, the current owners have refurbished the home and added a study and ground-floor bedroom.

Bidwells said: ‘The result is a thoughtfully redesigned home that combines architectural interest, historical significance and contemporary accommodation.’

Considered ‘one of the world’s greatest thinkers’ according to Penguin Books, Hawking was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge between 1979 and 2009.

The position is one of the most prestigious in academia.

At 21 he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease which paralysed him over decades but he far outlived predictions, living well into his eighth decade.
