Former champions University of Education, Winneba (UEW) reaffirmed their dominance in university sports after edging fierce rivals University of Cape Coast (UCC) 1-0 to win the football title at the 9th Peeva Mini GUSA Games in Accra.

The final, staged at the UPSA Park, lived up to its billing as a high-intensity encounter between two of Ghana’s most successful university sporting institutions. The tournament, held from May 5 to May 15, 2026, featured 16 tertiary institutions competing across multiple disciplines including football, athletics, volleyball, tennis, badminton, table tennis and 3×3 basketball under the theme “Integrating University Sports with Academic Professionalism.”

UCC started brightly, dominating possession and creating several early chances, but were repeatedly denied by the UEW goalkeeper, who produced key saves to keep the game level. Against the run of play, UEW broke the deadlock just before halftime through a penalty, awarded after a contentious incident inside the box.

After the restart, UCC pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but UEW remained compact and disciplined defensively, absorbing pressure and limiting clear-cut opportunities.

Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, UEW held firm to secure a narrow but memorable victory, underlining their pedigree in university football and adding another major title to their sporting history.
