The opening ceremony of the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships was held on Monday, May 11, at the University of Ghana Stadium, marking the official start of the continental competition in grand style.
The colourful ceremony celebrated Ghana’s rich cultural heritage through traditional displays, music and dance performances, while welcoming athletes and officials from across Africa.
Ghanaian music star Stonebwoy thrilled the crowd with an energetic performance, alongside celebrated dancer Afronita and other entertainers who lit up the atmosphere.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, attended the ceremony together with World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and Ghana Athletics President Bawa Fuseini.
Other dignitaries present included renowned politician Joshua Alabi, as Ghana officially welcomed Africa to Accra for the championship.
