A reckless driving stunt captured in a viral social media video has landed a Toyota Voxy driver before the La Motor Court, where he was convicted and sentenced for endangering the lives of road users on the Kumasi-Accra highway.

The convict, identified as Agyarko Richard, driver of a Toyota Voxy vehicle with registration number EN 551-26, was arrested following investigations by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service after the video sparked widespread public outrage online.

The footage, which circulated heavily on social media platforms, showed the driver dangerously navigating through traffic and allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road, putting both motorists and pedestrians at risk.

A statement issued by the Ghana Police Service revealed that the accused was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road, causing road obstruction, causing danger to other road users, and careless and inconsiderate driving contrary to provisions of the Road Traffic Regulations and the Road Traffic Act.

According to the police, the suspect was arraigned before the La Motor Court on May 8, 2026, presided over by Her Worship Adwoa Sakyi Asumadu.

The statement said Agyarko Richard pleaded guilty to all charges levelled against him.

The court subsequently convicted him on his own plea and sentenced him to pay a fine of 260 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢3,120, or in default serve 15 days imprisonment in hard labour.

In addition to the fine, the court sentenced the convict to two months imprisonment in hard labour.

The Ghana Police Service said the conviction should serve as a warning to motorists who continue to engage in reckless driving on the country’s roads.

It reiterated its commitment to enforcing road traffic regulations and ensuring that persons whose actions endangered public safety were made to face the law.

The police further cautioned drivers against dangerous driving practices, stressing that reckless behaviour on highways remained one of the major causes of road crashes and fatalities in the country.

Motorists were, therefore, urged to drive responsibly, comply with road traffic regulations, and prioritise the safety of other road users at all times.

The police also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting traffic offences and dangerous conduct captured on social media and other platforms to aid law enforcement efforts.
