The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has received 50 brand new laptop computers from Stanbic Bank Ghana as part of a sustained partnership aimed at expanding digital access for students.

The presentation was made on Thursday by a delegation led by the Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank Ghana, Kwamena Asomaning, who stressed that equitable access to technology is critical to Ghana’s digital future.

Of the 50 laptops, 40 have been specifically allocated to brilliant but financially constrained female students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes. The initiative is aimed at bridging the gender gap in digital education and STEM participation.

The donation forms part of the bank’s support for KNUST’s “Support One Student With One Laptop” (SONSOL) initiative, a flagship programme championed by the Vice-Chancellor, Rita Akosua Dickson.

Stanbic Bank has so far donated a cumulative 400 laptops to the university under the initiative, benefiting hundreds of students who would otherwise have struggled to access digital learning tools.

Mr Asomaning said digital inclusion was central not only to education but also to economic empowerment.

“As the digital economy continues to expand, equitable access to technology enables individuals to pursue education and skills development, secure employment, and engage meaningfully in civic life,” he said.

He added that the bank remained committed to supporting women in STEM through both material assistance and efforts to build confidence and encourage full participation in the field.

Receiving the laptops on behalf of the university, Prof. Dickson described the partnership as consistent and impactful.

She said “For years, Stanbic Bank has been here with KNUST, providing immense help to brilliant but needy students under the SONSOL project. Their timely interventions have shaped the lives of hundreds of students who would have been worse off without the support.”

She pledged that the university would continue to strengthen its collaboration with the bank, noting that the intervention had become a lifeline for many students striving to achieve their academic goals.
