The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schäfer as part of ongoing changes to the senior national team’s technical setup, according to Joy Sports.
Schäfer, who was appointed in late 2024 to support former head coach Otto Addo, leaves his role following Addo’s dismissal last month. His appointment came after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with the aim of strengthening the team’s technical structure.
Reports indicate that more members of the backroom staff could also be relieved of their duties, as the GFA plans to allow the incoming head coach to assemble his own technical team. Several high-profile names, including Slaven Bilić, Carlos Queiroz, and Fernando Santos, have been linked to the vacant position.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams recently indicated that a new coach is expected to be announced soon. The incoming manager will have limited time to prepare the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana will face England, Croatia, and Panama in the group stage.
