Former Ghana international Michael Essien has described the Black Stars’ group at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a daunting challenge following the official draw.

Ghana have been placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, setting up a difficult path to the knockout stage. Essien, who featured for the Black Stars at two World Cup tournaments, shared his thoughts in an interview with FIFA.com, urging the team to remain focused despite the strength of their opponents.

He stressed that while the group is tough, Ghana must approach each game with discipline and a winning mentality. According to him, success in tournament football often depends on consistency and the ability to handle pressure.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23. They will wrap up their group stage matches against Croatia on June 27.

Essien also highlighted the unpredictable nature of major tournaments, noting that Ghana still have a chance if they take it one game at a time.

Meanwhile, the team is currently without a head coach following Otto Addo’s dismissal, with the Ghana Football Association expected to decide on a replacement soon.
