Ghanaian football legend and current Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has confirmed he will not be in contention to replace Otto Addo as head coach of the Ghana Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Addo was relieved of his duties just over two months before the global tournament, following a 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in Stuttgart. The loss marked Ghana’s fourth consecutive setback in pre-World Cup warm-up matches, including a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria.

In an official statement, the Ghana Football Association announced Addo’s departure, ending his second stint in charge. Addo had previously led the Black Stars to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and successfully guided them to qualification for this year’s tournament.

Akonnor, who previously managed the Black Stars between 2020 and 2021 and earned 51 caps for Ghana, scoring 13 goals, was immediately linked with the vacant role. However, speaking to the media after Gor Mahia’s Kenyan Premier League fixture against Kariobangi Sharks on Saturday, the 52-year-old said: “I am with Gor Mahia. I’m very happy. I’m doing well.” His statement makes it clear his focus remains firmly with his current club.
