Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has urged the Ghana Football Association to appoint an experienced African coach to lead the Black Stars, insisting current local coaches are not yet ready for the role.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Vanderpuye acknowledged Ghana’s history of success under indigenous coaches but stressed that those achievements were driven by highly experienced managers. He argued that the current crop of Ghanaian coaches, including Otto Addo, Ibrahim Tanko, C. K. Akonnor, Godwin Attram, and Laryea Kingston, are still developing and lack the experience required to handle the senior national team.

According to him, these coaches should focus on building their careers at club level before being considered for the national job. He noted that such progression would help them develop the technical capacity and managerial experience needed at the highest level.

While aligning partly with views expressed by Rev. Osei Kofi, Vanderpuye reiterated his stance against hiring European coaches. Instead, he believes an experienced African manager would be better suited to understand the team’s dynamics and guide Ghana back to success on the international stage.
