President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater transparency and consistency in the disclosure of spending on sporting activities, emphasizing the need for accountability in the use of public funds.

The President made the remarks during a fundraising event held on Friday, March 20, at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, as the Black Stars step up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His comments follow concerns raised by Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association, who recently criticized what he described as excessive scrutiny of the team’s budget.

Addressing stakeholders, President Mahama stressed that Ghanaians deserve clarity on how national resources are utilized, particularly in sports. He noted that transparency is also crucial in attracting corporate sponsorship and investment into the sector.

He commended Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, for efforts to improve financial reporting, but urged authorities to maintain consistency in publishing expenditure details.

The event was attended by several government officials, including Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem.

On the pitch, Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Panama and Croatia, and will face Austria and Germany in upcoming friendlies.
