US-born youngster Luke Martey says it is an honour to represent Ghana after receiving a call-up to join the Ghana U-17 men national team ahead of the upcoming Africa U-17 Championship.

The talented forward, who plays for the youth side of FC Dallas, has joined the Black Starlets’ training camp as preparations intensify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for next month.

Martey has been training with the team at the Ghana FA Technical Centre and is hoping to impress head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum enough to secure a place in the final squad for the competition.

Speaking in a recent interview, the young midfielder shared his ambitions for the tournament and his desire to contribute positively to the team.

“Personal objective, just go there—the AFCON—shine, do my best with the team. Getting integrated with the team and just doing great things with them, I think that’s the most important thing for me,” Martey told Citi Sports.

The youngster also explained that representing Ghana means a lot to him because of his family roots.

“It’s just an honour to represent Ghana. I think it’s because of my parents; they were both born in Accra and they left a legacy for me to pick up so I think representing the Black Starlets and Ghana itself is a blessing.”

He added that his heritage played a major role in his decision to commit to Ghana at youth level.

“I think that’s one of the main motivations on why I chose to represent Ghana at such a young age.”

With the tournament fast approaching, the Black Starlets remain focused in camp as they aim to perform strongly in Morocco and secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup
