Former Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) President Bernard Quartey says he left behind a strong legacy and solid foundation for amateur boxing in Ghana following the end of his tenure.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Quartey defended his administration’s record, stating that he managed the federation prudently despite operating with limited financial support. According to him, he assumed office without any funds from the previous administration but worked hard to mobilize resources to run the federation’s activities.

Quartey said one of his key achievements was securing an international-standard boxing ring for competitions while also creating opportunities for referees, judges and boxers to gain international exposure. He noted that these initiatives contributed to Ghana’s improved performances at major competitions.

Under his leadership, Ghana’s amateur boxers won two silver medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and four gold medals at the 2023 African Games. Some of the standout fighters from the period include Samuel Takyi, Joseph Commey and Abu Kamoko.

He also revealed that the national boxing team, the Black Bombers, was strengthened with additional technical staff during attempts to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Quartey added that he has already rendered accounts to the Ghana Olympic Committee and urged the current GBF leadership to build on the progress made.
